What is it like to hear voices?
Hearing voices can be positive or negative. They can threaten you and say hurtful or cruel things about you or someone you know. This can be frightenng. You may find that your voices change at different times. They can become more distressing during difficult or stressful times.
What kind of voices do people hear?
- Someone calls your name but no one is with you.
- Her or see things as you fall asleep. These are called hypnosogic and hypnopompic hallucinations
- You can hear someone’s thoughts or as if others can hear your thoughts.
- Threatening or nasty voices that command you to do unacceptable and risky behaviours or even try to control you.
- You may also hear a kind of supportive voice.
- Hear between 1 to more than 10 voices and they may argue or talk to each other.
Why do I hear voices?
There are lots of reasons why you might hear voices. Here are some of them:
- Voices as you fall asleep or wake up – They are to do with your brain being partly in a dreaming state. This voice might call your name or something brief.
- Lack of sleep – Can cause you to hear voices or have other sensory experiences.
- Due to physical illness – If you have a high temperature and are delirious, you may hear voices or see and say strange things.
- Consume drugs – You may hear or see things after taking recreational drugs or as a side effect of some prescribed drugs. You might also have these experiences when you are coming off drugs.
- When feeling stressed or worry – You may hear voices while feeling very stressed, anxious or worried.
- Other traumatic experiences – You may hear voices which can be associated with post-traumatic stress disorder or dissociative disorders.
- Mental health problems –You may hear voices as a symptom of some mental health problem, including Psychosis, Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Schizoaffective Disorder or Severe Depression.
What causes people to hear voices?
There are different reasons why some people hear voices. You may hear oices as a way to cope with difficult emotions or a traumatic experience. Other things may cause you to hear voices. These include:
- Stress, anger and anxiety
- Drugs and alcohol
- Serious physical illness or following an operation
- Grief, divorce or separation
- Trauma
- Hunger or tiredness
- Functional Mental Disorders
- Schizoprenia
- Psychotic Depression
- Maniac Episode and Bipolar Disorder
- Multiple Personality Disorder
- Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD)
- Post-Partum Psychosis
How long will each session last?
Sessions are booked to last for 50 minuts. If you think you may need more time, please mention this when booking your appointmenr as this can be arranged.
How many sessions will I need?
This will be entirely up to you. Part of the counselling process is reviewing how it is helping with the issues you bring to the sessions. It is helpful to have a session once a week initially.
Will my information be kept confidential?
Your privacy is taken cery seriously. Any inofrmation discussed during counselling will be kept confidential. The boundaries of confidentiality will be discussed with you during the first session.
What happens if I need to cancel my appointment?
You can cancel via phone call to 6225 5455. Fees will be payable if less than 24 hours notice is provided.
